Regular inspections

Regular inspections are critical to monitor hive activity
Inspections should be at least weekly
Make sure the bees have enough room for brood and storage
Adding supers
A super is best placed on top of the previous one when it is about two thirds full, especially where foundation has to be drawn.

Bees can often be reluctant to enter a new super, but this can be overcome by swapping two empty frames near the centre of the new super with a couple of frames of open honey from the previous super.

Swarm Management Procedures

Manage the impulse to swarm by keeping young queens. It is thought that a young queen
will produce larger amounts of queen substance than an older queen. Put an extra super
on when the last one is full of bees, not full of honey.

Make sure that the colony has plenty of ventilation as this ensures that the queen substance
can be distributed easily. It also helps in the evaporation of the nectar.
